Cyberstalking is the use of the Internet, email, text messaging, or other electronic communications to follow someone in a threatening manner, and generally refers to using information obtained from those electronic investigations in a malicious or threatening manner. Cyberstalking is often considered one of the most potentially dangerous cybercrimes, given that the perpetrator is often demonstrating an advanced knowledge of the victim's practices and an intention to use that information to harm the person. Often cyberstalking is seen as a precursor to actual violence in the physical world, therefore it is taken quite seriously by law enforcement. Penalties for cyberstalking vary by jurisdiction and by the circumstances of the case, but they may include misdemeanor or felony charges depending on the types of threats made or actual harm caused.
