define (v) – definition (n) – definite (=clear) / definitive (=final) (a)

1. The powers of a judge are defined by law.

3. I want a definite answer: “yes” or“no”.

5. To give a definition of a word is more difficult than to give an example of itsuses.

compel (v) – compulsion (n) – compulsory(a)

1. His conscience compelled him toconfess.

3. A defeated country usually signs a treaty of peace under compulsion.

5. It is compulsory for all drivers to have insurance.

obey (v) – obedience (n) – obedient (a)

1. Soldiers must always obey their commanding officer. (Don’t say “obey to the officer”, say “obey the officer”)

3. Bruno was a quiet and obedient little boy.
4. Я бы хотел, чтобы мои дети были более послушными.
5. The General demanded absolute obedience from his men.

punish (v) – punishment (n) – punishable/ punitive (a)

1. This man was never punished for hiscrime.
