APPENDIX 4: PRESENTATIONS

APPENDIX 4

PRESENTATIONS

Presentation requirements:

Note! Your presentation has to be professional, which doesn’t mean boring!

You need to remember that:

1)    A presentation is a persuasion vehicle. Remember that you want to sell your product; therefore you want some support for your idea. Don’t try to tell your audience everything you know. The presentation should appeal to emotions and reason. Use stories not just charts and graphs.

2)    A presentation is a picture of you and your organization. You have to sound and look confident, stay professional and use the presentation as an opportunity to showcase yourself  at your best

3)    A presentation is a powerful and interactive communication medium. Remember to read the audience reaction and be able to change your approach if necessary.

4)    A presentation is your chance to shine! Impress your colleagues, boss and possible investors.

What do I start with?

1)    Presentation is prepared with the help of Power Point program. The number of slides to be included depends on the topic and situation. The presentation should look consistent

2)    Use basic design templates or make your own, but it has to match the topic. If the presentation is dedicated to some serious technical subject it is better to stick to some simple strict background rather than bright multicolored patterns.

3)    Pick an easy front slide. It has to contain the following information:

  • Name of the university (logo)
  • Name of the presentation
  • Names of the group participants
  • Year

Try to organize the information in an easy readable way.

4)    Carefully select front sizes and colors for headers and texts. Match colors and size for the text. It is better not to use more than 2 different colors for text.

5)    KISS: Keep It Straight and Simple.

You need

  • ONLY keywords on your slides
  • NO full sentences
  • Images as a key element of your presentation.

6)    Slides Animation can improve understanding and make the message stick with your audience. BUT Careful! Do not overuse it; otherwise it can produce a comic impression.

During the presentation:

  • Never read your slides! Talk freely.
  • Do not speak too fast!
  • Keep eye contact with your audience.
  • Speak with confidence – loud and clear.
  • Know your slides inside out.

Final tricks:

  • Remember that you should rehearse the presentation in advance to check whether you are able to meet the timing requirements.
  • Think of possible questions your audience can come up with. Think of the best answer.

GOOD LUCK!
